Catalan authorities are on high alert due to a potential terrorist attack in Barcelona over the holidays. The US State Department already announced a security alert on December 23, telling its citizens to exercise “heightened caution” if they are traveling to Barcelona, due to a potential terrorist attack. “Exercise heightened caution around areas of vehicle movement, including buses, in the Las Ramblas area of Barcelona during Christmas and New Year’s. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, and other public areas,” warned the US State Department. The Consulate General of the United Arab Emirates in Barcelona has followed with a similar warning to tourists and residents in the city of Barcelona. “The Consulate-General of the State of Barcelona calls on visitors and residents of the State to take precautions, avoid tourist spots and gatherings during the Christmas and New Year periods, and abide by instructions issued by the relevant authorities in Barcelona,” warned the UAE Consulate in Barcelona. US travelers have been reminded by the US Consulate General in Barcelona to avoid the area of Las Ramblas and exercise additional vigilance at holiday festivals and events.
